Every morning (except Mondays off-season) the covered market on Cours Masséna fills with flowers, socca, goat's cheese, tapenade and lavender in every form. Come hungry, leave laden — this is the beating heart of the old town.

Musée Picasso (Château Grimaldi)

10.30am — Picasso's castle studio, and that sculpture terrace over the sea.
Picasso worked in the Château Grimaldi in 1946 and left the results to the town — the world's first museum dedicated to him. The sculpture terrace over the Mediterranean is worth the ticket on its own.
